On February 21, I was able to check out the NYC date of I See Stars’s latest headlining tour. Along side these guys were Palaye Royale, Get Scared and Chunk! No Captain Chunk.
Though my night did not start off with the first band on the bill, The White Noise, I could not have asked for a better intro into this mind-blowing night than I could with Palaye Royale. These boys stepped off a Rock n’ Roll time machine; and we are not mad about it. I haven’t heard any new bands that are straight [good] Rock n’ Roll for at least two decades. What mad this group even more enjoyable to watch was the fact that perform like rockstars. Each member was dressed as if they were from a different era of rock music. While it may not have been a packed house, by the crowd’s reaction you couldn’t even tell. We are all expecting very big things from these guys. On the flip side; however, if their music career doesn’t pan out as planned (though I highly doubt it won’t) they all have the cheekbones for a modeling career.
Next on this night of mixed rock bands was Get Scared. The last time I saw these guys they were opening up for Silverstein two years ago on the very same stage they were about to perform on. Two years may not seem like a lot of time, but it seemed to be just enough time for the boys of Get Scared to grow with their music. Not only has their music grown and matured but so has their stage presence. This band always has a strong crowd reaction but tonight was by far the best I’ve seen for them.
Chunk! No, Captain Chunk was next to the stage. These guys will always hold a special place in my heart because they were the first band to give me a photo pass. Since the first time I ever saw/photographed them when they opened for A Day To Remember to now, I have never been disappointed with their performance. Their music is always enjoyable, plus how can you not love their French-ness? I’m not the only one who gets pumped for these guys, starting from the first song to the last, crowd surfers flooded the pit & moshers dominated the crowd.
Finally it was time for the band we were all waiting for, I See Stars. Well, for one thing I lost my vision thanks to their led and strobe lights, but that doesn’t mean it all wasn’t worth it. I See Stars shed some of their members and along the way became a more evolved band. Their new stuff is very post hardcore mixed with a techno style. However, they still know how to perform ballets with a very pop-punk sound. While their new stuff may not sound like the old I See Stars that we all know and love; fans can hold strong knowing that while I See Stars has changed you can still expect their classic break downs.
Overall, the night started out as one big hot mess but quickly turned around to an intense and incredible performance by all the bands on this bill. We were able to hear a slightly wide range of rock music, which doesn’t happen much anymore. From the new bands we expect great things in their future. From the bands that have been on the scene for a while, we are impressed at not only how far they’ve come in their careers but also how much they’ve all grown as individuals and as musicians.
